We each navigate mental health, relationships, and life with experiences unique to our own stories. Some of these factors are biological, family, and social, from the encounters we carry with us. These early moments shaped our opportunities, access to resources, and even our beliefs. There is power in naming the systems that shaped us. That awareness is the first step in change that meets your needs and goals. While I can't take away the past or predict the future, I can support you in changing the present moment. These changes will challenge you and the systems weighing your story. Mindfully connecting to the present moment, clients can expect to listen more to their bodies, values, and authentic self.
I recognize the history of harm the healthcare system perpetuates against marginalized communities. Therefore, I hold purposeful space for these groups in my motivations for cultural humility in healthcare. I strive for a collaborative approach in this healing journey. This way, I tailor our treatment to meet your specific goals. Therapy will require work and home practice outside sessions to effectively meet your goals.
As an integrative therapist, I bring skills from different theories and interventions together in sessions. Specifically, I've trained in LGBTQ+ affirming counseling, CBT, Humanistic, Narrative, and Mindfulness-based therapies. I have worked with the LGBTQ+ community and people living with HIV for over 6 years. I have work experience providing counseling for depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, trauma, and sex therapy, including working with BDSM & kink communities, career/life transitions, and other mental health concerns. As a Black LGBTQ+ therapist, I understand firsthand the challenges of finding affirming care and a therapist you click with. I hope to be that space for you. -
In order to optimize the development of my professional counseling identity, I am required by the state accreditation board to receive clinical supervision from a licensed professional counselor. Dr. Monica P. Band, LPC (DC & VA), CRC, NCC, ACS, CCC, is serving as my sole and primary onsite supervisor for the duration of my residency.
