Land Acknowledgement

At the place our main office resides, near the United States Capitol, was once surrounded by over a dozen tribal nations that thrived along the Anacostia and Potomac River watersheds, Chesapeake Bay area, and the states of Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. Washington D.C. Here we occupy the ancestral lands of the Anacostans (also documented as Nacotchtank), and the neighboring Piscataway and Pamunkey peoples.

The District of Columbia shares borders with Maryland and Virginia and connects with lands along the Anacostia and Potomac River. These river systems and current national parks are where the Piscataway, Pamunkey, the Nentego (Nanichoke), Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Monacan, and the Powhatan cultures thrived.

This land acknowledgment is our way of recognizing Indigenous presence in our everyday lives, gratitude and celebration to the tribes who lovingly stewarded these lands past, present, and future and serves as a call to consistently reflect on impacts of colonialism in our history as a nation, and community so that we may strive to not perpetuate oppression and colonialism in our practice.
